Freedom of the press is freighted with the responsibility of providing the current intelligence needed by a free society.... The press must, therefore, provide a truthful, comprehensive, and intelligent account of the day's events in a context which gives them meaning.
-- The Commission on Freedom of the Press, 1947
Robert M. Hutchins, Chair
The mission of FACS is to improve the quality of information reaching the public through the news. We believe better journalism can be achieved through education. Toward that end, FACS provides educational seminars designed to equip journalists to write knowledgeably on the issues that are vital to our society.
In a self-governing society, news is a vital commodity. It provides knowledge to help individuals and organizations make informed decisions about important public issues. The understanding of issues requires knowledge of basic concepts and principles and an up-to-the-minute awareness of controversies and debates.
Journalists often lack the tools, sources, and resources needed to provide the public with the highest quality information and insight. In a complex, rapidly changing world, FACS recognizes the need for education to help overcome these challenges.
In the advancement of these goals, FACS provides the following services:
• Educational seminars for journalists in core academic subjects including energy, economics, community growth, healthcare, environment and climate change;
• Online background information from our seminar faculty to help journalists in their work;
• A database of top experts and scholars on whom reporters can call for help.
FACS is guided by the most current research of our academic advisors from the nation's top institutions. FACS translates their knowledge and tailors it specifically to meet the needs of journalists.
FACS is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational organization with its headquarters in Pasadena, California. Founded in 1976, FACS has delivered educational programs to thousands of journalists. The role of the media in society has never been more vital. Yet seldom has the media’s credibility been so challenged. FACS is dedicated to helping journalists succeed in this difficult environment.
